Wake held for murdered 2-year-old Haruna

TOKYO, Japan - A wake was held at the Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo on Nov. 28 for 2-year-old Haruana Wakayama who was allegedly murdered by Mitsuko Yamada, 35, a Tokyo housewife. Some 400 people attended the event. Yamada was arrested Nov. 25 on charges of murder and abandoning the girl's body.

Press rush to police station as missing girl's body found

TOKYO, Japan - Crowds of reporters and photographers rush to Otsuka Police Station in Tokyo on Nov. 25 on reports that a body believed to be that of 2-year-old Haruna Wakayama, missing since Nov. 22, was found in Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. Later in the night, police arrested Mitsuko Yamada on suspicion of the toddler's murder.

Woman gets 14 years for killing girl over 'snubbing'

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) is sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Tokyo District Court on Dec. 5 for killing Haruna Wakayama, a 2-year-old daughter of an acquaintance she allegedly thought had snubbed her.

Murderer ordered to pay compensation in installments

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 4 ordered Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) who murdered a 2-year-old girl to pay the victim's parents 61 million yen in compensation, of which 19.8 million yen is to be paid in installments over 20 years. In November, the Tokyo High Court sentenced Yamada to 15 years in prison for strangling Haruna Wakayama on Nov. 22, 1999, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and burying her body in the backyard of Yamada's parents' home in the town of Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. Trial opens in murder of 2-year-old girl

TOKYO, Japan - People line up outside the Tokyo District Court on March 6 to get seats by the drawings of lots at the first hearing of the trial of a 36-year-old housewife charged with slaying a 2-year-old Tokyo girl and burying her body in November. Mitsuko Yamada, a mother of two, is accused of strangling Haruna Wakayama, an acquaintance's daughter, with a scarf in a public toilet in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward on Nov. 22.
